Friday 20 December : Carol Singing around Builth

A number of choristers came together to sing carols around the pubs in Builth Wells on Friday 20 December raising funds for Builth Wells Community Support.  The choir members finished the evening singing carols around the Christmas Tree at the Greyhound Hotel

Earlier in the week a small group of choristers led the Christmas Carol Singing at Caerwnen Park. Over the two events a total over £300 was raised to help fund the work of Builth Wells Community Support. Ian Coldrick, Chairman of the Choir, thanked everyone who participtaed in these events and all who had given so generously to the charity helping people live healthy and independant lives within their community.

The catering team at The Greyhound did a wonderful job of serving members of the choir and their partners with a three course meal. So many thanks to all involved. The seasonal draft beer on offer was called Blotto but it didn’t seem to fulfil it’s promise! Maybe just as well. The dining room was beautifully decorated with Christmas lights.

Once the plates had been cleared we had Megan Reece entertaining us with a great selection of songs. Megan has a wonderful voice and included some Christmas songs we could sing along with. It all helped to bring a Christmas atmosphere to the evening.

Wednesday 27 November : 50th Anniversary at Brynhyfryd Home Builth

Builth Male Voice Choir was invited to take part in the 50th Annivesary celebrations at Brynhyfryd Home Builth on Wedneday 27 November 2024. The Choir’s musical diector Adrian Morgan was unfortunately unable to attend due to an emergency hospital procedure and the Choir was lead by their accompanist Ann Bufton with assistance from their secretary Viv Jones. The very appreciative audience of residents, visitors and staff thoroughly enjoyed the Choir who sang a repertoire of favourite songs.

Sunday 3 November : 325th Anniversary Concert Plough Chapel Brecon

Builth Male Voice Choir were pleased to be invited to perform in a concert at the Plough Chapel Brecon on Sunday 3 November to celebrate 325 years of worship at the Plough. Musical Director Adrin Morgan said “It was lovely to share the stage with the Soprano, Stefanie Harvey-Powell,  whose programme was a wonderful contrast to that of the choir”

Saturday 19 October : Concert at Dolfor Community Centre

Builth Male Voice Choir was invited to sing a concert at Dolfor Community Hall in support of Severn Hospice Shrewsbury.  The choir was supported by local soloists Ian Davies (bass) and his daughter Sioned Davies who enchanted a full capacity audience with her interpretation of songs from the show Les Miserables. The Dolfor Charity Group thanked the Choir and soloists for their entertaining performances and was pleased that a substantial contribution will be made to the Severn Hospice Shrewsbury.

Thursday 17 October : Metropole Hotel Concert

The Choir performed their final 2024 after dinner concert for guests at the Metropole Hotel, Llandrindod Wells visiting Wales on a tour organised by Great Rail Journeys. The Choir sang a wide variety of songs in Welsh and English giving the visitors a flavour of a typical Male Voice Choir Concert.

Friday 30 August : Concert at St James’Church, Wigmore

Builth Male Voice Choir was honoured to be invited to sing a concert at the ancient St James’s Church Wigmore in aid of The Friends of the Church. The choir enjoyed performing in the superb acoustics of the 1,000 year old year old church and sang four sets of music (programme). Duncan Gibbs had been invited to be the soloist performing on the mountain dulcimer. The concert had been organised to raise funds to support the continued use of St James’ Church as a community asset.

Saturday 3 August : Wedding in Beulah

On 3rd August the choir sang at a wedding in Eglwys Oen Duw, Beulah. The occasion was the wedding of Matthew and Kelly who is the grandaughter of the late Tom Evans, former member of the choir. The choir sang before the bride arrived, during the signing of the register and as the recessional . They also bolstered the hymn singing during the ceremony itself. The Choir members extended congratulations and best wishes to Matthew and Kelly on their wedding day.

Saturday 20 July : Wedding in Tenbury Wells

The Choir was honoured to take part in Deborah and Graham’s wedding at St Mary’s Church Tenbury Wells singing for guests before the service, while the register was signed and later at the wedding reception at The Founrain Inn. For signing the register the choir sang an arrangement of “Can’t Help Falling in Love” specially arranged for the choir by Jeffrey Howard plus Calon Lan. at the reception the Choir sang traditional Welsh songs plus arrangements of modern popular songs. After their performances the choir members enkoyed a refreshments together at the invitation of the bride and groom.

Wednesday 17 July : Metropole Hotel Concert

The Choir entertained a large group of guests at the Metropole Hotel Llandrindod Wells. The choir sang three sets of songs, including four songs with a boating and sea theme in recognition of the 200th Anniversary of the founding of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

Monday 1 July : Presentation to Motor Neuron Desease Association

he Chairman of Builth Male Voice Choir, Ian Coldrick, presenting a cheque in the sum £1,000 to Richard Shakelford on behalf of the Motor Neurone Desease Association at a recent practice night. The sum was raised earlier in the year at the Choir’s St David’s Day Charity Concert in Builth Wells Sports Centre. Richard explained the work of the Motor Neuron Desease Association in enabling everyone living with and affected by MND access the help and support they need. He thanked Builth MaleVoice Choir for their generous contribution .

The Choir performed an after dinner concert for guests at the Metropole Hotel, Llandrindod Wells visiting Wales on a tour organised by Great Rail Journeys. The Choir sang a wide variety of songs in Welsh and English giving the visitors a flavour of a typical Male Voice Choir Concert . Charles Nutting, a new member of the bass section, enjoyed his first concert on stage and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Saturday 15 June – Wedding in Cardiff

The Choir was pleased to take part in Emily and Ben’s wedding ceremony at St Isan’s Church Cardiff singing for guests before the service and during the wedding ceremony, For the bride’s entry the Choir sang a new arrangement of Can’t he;p falling in love specially arranged by Jeffrey Howard. The Choir sang two songs during the signing of the register and Unchained melody for the bride and groom’s departure from the church. After the ceremony the choir members enkoyed a lunch and drink together at the invitation of the bride and groom.

Saturday 25 May – Wedding in Presteigne

The Choir was priviliged to be invited to take part in Olivia and Mohassin’s wedding in a glorious country house setting near Presteigne. The Choir sang for guests before and after the wedding ceremony and opened with a rousing rendition of Calon Lan before performing a set of romantic songs from their wedding repertoire. The choir was favourably commented on by guests including a  number of professional musicians!

17-19 May 2024 – Trip to Wiltshire

On Friday 17th May choir members and partners were conveyed across the border to tour Wiltshire and perform in two concerts. The first concert took place that evening in Abbey Church, Amesbury together with the Salisbury Plain Military Wives. The church has superb acoustics for choral singing and both choirs used it to the full. We have sung there before with the SPM Wives but they are a bigger choir now and they sang very well with their extra voices.

On Saturday the coach took us to Bradford-on-Avon which is a beautiful old wool and weaving town with plenty to see and do.  As well as the River Avon, the Kennet and Avon Canal passes through, so giving lots of locations for cafés, pubs and interesting shops. Many of the buildings are constructed of limestone as is the nearby town of Bath.

Our second concert took place in St Andrew’s Church in Chippenham. This was a joint concert with Chippenham Male Voce Choir. Bill Bain is a member of this choir now and was the link between us, as he still is an occasional singer with Builth. Both choirs sang Morte Criste and American Trilogy together for  rousing finalé.

Reading Male Voice Choir Tour Report

Reading Male Voice Choir started their tour of Powys by giving a free lunchtime concert in Brecon Cathedral on the Friday. The acoustic was superb for the choice of music such as Ave Maria and Schubert’s Sanctus and the large audience thoroughly enjoyed the performance.

Their main Gala Concert was at The Pavilion in Llandrindod Wells on the evening of Saturday 27th where Reading MVC sang a very accomplished and varied programme of male voice singing. Builth MVC as the hosting choir also took part in the concert with Luned Jones having to step in as MD at the last moment. Both choirs combined in the second half to sing three songs including Speed Your Journey and Morte Criste. The audience was most impressed by their combined voices.

Supporting the choirs was Megan Reece, the talented Mid Wales based singer/songwriter. With soul, jazz and blues influences, her performance gave a beautiful contrast to the choral singing. Proceeds of the concert will be donated to The Bracken Trust charity which supports anyone affected by cancer.

On the Sunday morning the choir sang in St Mary’s Church in Builth Wells performing several songs and boosting the congregation.

Thursday 25 April : After Dinner Concert Metropole Hotel

The Choir gave its first after dinner concert of 2024 to guests at the Metropole Hotel, Llandrindod Wells visiting Wales on a tour organised by Great Rail Journeys. The Choir sang a wide variety of songs in Welsh and English giving the visitors a flavour of a typical Male Voice Choir Concert . Reading Male Voice Choir members were also guests in the hotel and after the concert members of both choirs were able to sing together

Saturday 2 March : Award to Ann Bufton

The High Sheriff of Powys, Reg Cawthorne, presenting Ann Bufton, accompanist for Builth Male Voice Choir, with the High Sheriff’s Award in recognition of great and valuable services to the community. The presentation was made during the St. David’s Day Concert at the Builth Wells Sports Centre on Saturday 2 March 2024 in recognition of over forty years service that Ann has been the accompanist for Builth Male Voice Choir. During this time Ann has also supported other choirs when called upon to do and provided accompaniment to solo singers and taught children to play the piano.

Saturday 2 March : St David’s Day Concert, Builth Sports Hall

Builth Male Voice Choir and the Carmarthen Ukuleles entertained a Builth Wells audience at the Sports Centre recently.  The groups were performing in a lively St David’s Day concert, which was held on Saturday, March 2.

The choir performed several new songs including Andy Grammer’s “Don’t Give Up On Me” and “The Ground” by Ola Gjeilo as well as some well-known audience favourites such as “Bring Him Home” from Les Misérables and Ryan Davies’ “Pan Fo’r Nos Yn Hir”.

The choir was led by musical director Adrian Morgan and accompanist Ann Bufton.  David Power was the compère for the evening and kept the audience well entertained between songs.

The Carmarthen Ukuleles performed well-known tunes that had a Welsh connection with infectious energy and got the audience singing and clapping along.

All proceeds will go to the Motor Neurone Disease Association and the choir would like to thank all those that came along to support such a worthy cause.

Saturday 17 February : Social Evening Greyhound Hotel

Builth Male Voice Choir held a social evening at the Greyhound Hotel on Saturday 17 February and invited a number of potential new members and partners to join them. The Choir sang a selection of songs from their extensive repertoire and then everyone shared an enjoyable buffet meal together. The Chairman, Ian Coldrick, spoke of the benefits of singing in a sociable choir like Builth Male Voice Choir and hoped that the evening had given the guests a taster to persuade them to consider being members.
